A Texas native, who was raised along with his sister by their grandparents after their folks’ divorce; Willie Nelson got his musical start taking mail-order music lessons from the age of 6. In high school, he joined fiddler Bud Fletcher’s Bohemian Fiddlers, then went on to the Air Force and a brief one-year stint at Baylor College before heading out to make a life in music.
His first recording was Leon Payne’s “Lumberjack” and his first songwriting sale was “Family Bible” which Calude Gray recorded in1960 and for which Willie Nelson received a whopping $50.
After some challenging false starts in Tennessee performing with Ray Price and the Cherokee Cowboys and writing songs made successful by other recording artists, Willie Nelson joined the Grand Ole Opry. When this proved unhelpful to his shaky career, he moved back to Texas, Austin this time, where he attempted to hone his own style of country music, which incorporated elements of jazz, folk, and western swing.
It wasn’t until the Outlaw Country movement of the 1970’s that Willie Nelson began garnering the acclaim he deserved. From there, Willie Nelson’s career has been a steadily swelling phenomenon. He’s released close to 50 albums, including 15 that hit number1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart.
Some of the most familiar and beloved Willie Nelson albums include: Shotgun Willie, Troublemaker, Stardust, Honeysuckle Rose, Outlaws and Angels, and Countryman. He’s widely recognized by even non-country music fans for songs like “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys”, “Always On My Mind”, “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before”, “The Gambler”, and of course, “On the Road Again”. And country music lovers can’t help but count “My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys” and “Crazy” among their favorite tunes ever.
Over his lengthy career, Willie Nelson has recorded and performed with the likes of fellow legends: Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Freddie Powers, Ray Charles, Brenda Lee, Bonnie Raitt, and Toby Keith, among others. He even recorded an entire album of Kris Kristofferson covers.
He’s won 9 Grammy Awards, including their illustrious Legend Award and Lifetime Achievement Award. He’s also won 9 Country Music Association Awards (CMA), 7 American Music Awards, and 5 American Country Music Awards (ACM), among multitudinous others. In 1993 Willie Nelson was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
