The Pittsburgh Panthers are one of 16 teams in the Big East Conference - along with the Cincinnati Bearcats, Connecticut Huskies, DePaul Blue Demons, Georgetown Hoyas, Louisville Cardinals, Marquette Golden Eagles, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Providence Friars, Rutgers Scarlet Knights, St. John's Red Storm, Seton Hall Pirates, USF Bulls, Syracuse Orange, Villanova Wildcats, and West Virginia Mountaineers.

The Pittsburgh Panthers (or "Pitt Panthers" as they're commonly known) are the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) men's football and basketball teams for the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, one of 7 public universities in the Big East.

The Pittsburgh Panthers play their football home games at the 65,000 seat Heinz Field, home of the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers, and their basketball home games at the 12,508 seat Petersen Event Center. The team uniform colors are blue and gold, and the mascot is ROC the Panther.

Football:

The Pitt Panthers began playing football in 1890 and have since been a very productive football team on the field. They boast a 654-476-41 (.576) record, including a 10-15 record in bowl games and 9 claimed national titles, their last in 1976.

Dave Wannstedt is entering his fifth season as head coach of the Pittsburgh Panthers and has led the team to a 25-23 record. He might be better known by football fans for being the former coach of the Miami Dolphins between 2000 and 2004 and the Chicago Bears from 1993 to 1998.

The Pittsburgh Panthers football program has produced many excellent NFL players, past and present. Well-known graduates include Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino, running back Tony Dorsett, and former NFL player and coach Mike Ditka. Current players include Joe Flacco (Baltimore Ravens), Larry Fitzgerald (Arizona Cardinals), and Darrelle Revis (New York Jets).

The Pitt Panthers finished 2008 with a 9-4 record, culminating in a loss at the Sun Bowl. Despite this, the team has steadily improved since the beginning of Dave Wannstedt’s tenure. Get your tickets today and watch the Panthers become a force to be reckoned with in the Big East.

Basketball:

The Pittsburgh Panthers have a number of school heroes in their previous rosters including Mark Blount (Minnesota Timberwolves) and Dejuan Blair (San Antonio Spurs) of the NBA (National Basketball Association). Nine Pittsburgh Panthers were honored as All-Americans including Charley Hyatt (2-time National scoring leader, and the only Pittsburgh player to make it to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame) as well as Sykes Reed, Don Smith, Clarie Cribbs, Don Hennon, Billy Knight, Jerome Lane, Charles Smith, and Brandin Knight.

Before coming to the Big East, the Panthers were the Eastern Eight tournament champions 2 years in a row (1981 and 1982), and Eastern Intercollegiate champions 4 out of the 5 years from 1932 to 1937.

The Pittsburgh Panthers earned their two Big East tournament titles in 2003 and 2008 and three Big East regular season titles (1988, 2002, and 2004). The Panthers have made 21 NCAA Championship appearances, 2 consecutive Sweet Sixteens, and 8 NIT (National Invitation Tournament) appearances. They were 2-time National champs, in 1928 and 1930.

Head coach of the Pittsburgh Panthers is Jamie Dixon, currently in his 7th season with the team. He has led the Panthers to an impressive 163-45 record since his arrival.

In 2008-09 the Pittsburgh Panthers finished with a 15-3 record in the Big East and 31-5 in the NCAA. Get your Pittsburgh Panthers tickets now and see how they tear up the court this year.
