The Illinois Fighting Illini are the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) men's football and basketball teams for the University of Illinois in Urbana and Champaign, Illinois, one of 8 public universities in the Big Ten. The Fighting Illiniwere one of the founding members of the Big Ten when it started in 1896. They are two of the university's 21 varsity teams (10 men's, 11 women's). They are one of 2 teams in the Big Ten from the state of Illinois, the others being the Northwestern Wildcats.
