Toronto Maple Leafs Tickets Information
Starting out at the birth of the National Hockey League in 1917, the team was originally known as the Toronto Arenas, changing their name 2 years later to the Toronto St. Patricks, and only becoming the Toronto Maple Leafs that we know them to be today in 1927, at the hands of visionary NHL builder Conn Smythe (also responsible for the New York Rangers).
Whatever their name, this Canadian force of nature has won 13 Stanley Cups and 5 Northeast Division Championships. Interestingly enough, they've won not a single Eastern Conference Championship (barring those 13 that sent them to the Cup finals, of course).
The Toronto Maple Leafs play their home games at Air Canada Centre where head coach Ron Wilson and minions put their NHL foes to the ultimate test. Their success this coming season is highly dependant on the return of goaltender Vesa Toskala to the lineup. Toskala has been inconsistent since making his debut with the Leafs two years ago, and with his recent surgery to repair a torn labrum, the pressure is on him more than ever. Burke signed Jonas Gustavsson, widely considered the best goaltender not in the NHL to push Toskala.
The biggest change in the Leafs’ makeup is evident in their defensive core. The Leafs struck early in free agency, trading for Garnet Exelby (Atlanta Thrashers), and signing Francois Beauchemin (Anaheim Ducks) and all-star defenseman Mike Komisarek (Montreal Canadiens). They join impressive sophomore Luke Schenn, Tomas Kaberle, Mike Van Ryn, Ian White, and Jeff Finger, forming one of the better defensive groups in the NHL.
The Leafs potential Achilles’ heel this season lies in their group of forwards. Veterans Jason Blake, Alexei Ponikarovski and Niklas Hagman return, along with a youth movement including Mikhail Grabovski, Nikolai Kulemin, Lee Stempniak and Matt Stajan. Without a superstar to score goals, the Leafs will need to continue producing like they did last year (10th in goal scoring in 2008-09).
