The Stanford Cardinal are the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) men's football and basketball teams for Stanford University in Stanford, California, one of 2 private and nonsectarian universities in the Pac-10, and one of 4 from the state of California, the others being the University of Southern California, UCLA, and University of California, Berkeley. They are two of the university's 31 varsity teams.
The Stanford Cardinal play their football home games at the 50,000 seat Stanford Stadium and their basketball home games at the 7,392 seat Maples Pavilion. The team uniform colors are cardinal and white. Ever since the Indian was dropped as the school's mascot in 1972, the school no longer has an official mascot, though many people mistakenly believe that it's the Stanford Tree.

The Stanford Cardinal football program was established in 1892 and has since been very successful, posting a record of 640-440-52 (.588). In postseason bowl games, they have a record of 9-10-1, as well as 2 national titles and 12 conference titles.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh is entering his 2nd year with the Cardinal and has coached them to a 4-8 record. Harbaugh is probably best known for his playing days in the NFL where he quarterbacked for the Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts, Baltimore Ravens and San Diego Chargers. He is also known for coaching the Cardinal to the greatest upset in college football history in 2007. The Cardinal were 41 point underdogs against #1 USC, but defeated the team by a score of 24-23 with a touchdown in the final minute.
