They are one of the university's 17 varsity teams. The Red Storm have a heated ongoing rivalry with the Georgetown University Hoyas that dates back to the 1980s when both teams had killer coaches (John Thompson for Georgetown, Lou Carnesecca for St. John's) and both teams were consistently huge contenders for Big East and NCAA championship titles.

The St. John's Red Storm have a number of school heroes in their previous rosters including current NBA (National Basketball Association) player Ron Artest (L.A. Lakers) and former NBA champ Bill Wennington of the 1996, '97, and '98 Chicago Bulls. Overall, St. John's has sent 59 players to the NBA.
One of St. John's most legendary graduates, though, was James "Buck" Freeman who went straight from being a Red Storm player to coach, and taking the team to a 9-year record of 171-31.
The St. John's Red Storm have won 3 Big East tournament titles (in 1983, 1986, and 2000). They won 2 consecutive Big East regular season titles in 1985 and 1986. They have made 27 NCAA Championship appearances and 27 NIT (National Invitation Tournament) appearances. The team is currently the 5th most successful in the history of college basketball, with 1,716 wins.
Currently in his 6th season now with the Red Storm (since 2004), is head coach Norm Roberts, who was head coach of Queens College from 1991 to 1994. His brightest years, however, were as a Division I assistant when he took his various teams to 2 Elite Eights and 1 Sweet Sixteen.
