SEC Championship Tickets Information
The Southeastern Conference of Division 1-A of the NCAA is comprised of 12 college football teams from 9 states located in the southeastern part of the United States, those being: the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Arkansas Razorbacks, the Florida Gators, the Georgia Bulldogs, the Kentucky Wildcats, the LSU Tigers, the Mississippi State Bulldogs, the South Carolina Gamecocks, and the Tennessee Volunteers.
At the end of each 8-game NCAA regular football season conference schedule, the top team from the SEC East Division competes against the top team from the SEC West Division for the title of Southeastern Conference champions for the year. The winner of the SEC Championship Game goes on to represent the SEC in the Bowl Championship Series.
The tradition of the Southeastern Conference Championship Game started when the University of South Carolina and the University of Arkansas joined the SEC in 1991, expanding the conference to 12 teams. The Southeastern Conference is the first NCAA conference to hold a football championship game.
The first and second SEC Championship Games were played in 1992 at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama. From then on (since 1994), the SEC Championship Game has been held at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Southeastern Conference East Division is currently leading the series 11-6, giving the Southeastern Conference West Division quite a bit of catch-up to play.
The Florida Gators lead the conference with the most number of appearances in the SEC Championship Game, with 9 appearances and 7 wins. Alabama has the second most number of appearances, at 6, and ties with Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia for the third most number of wins (2), behind LSU who has won 3.
Four schools – Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Mississippi, and Kentucky – have never appeared in Southeastern Conference Championship Games. Two others – Arkansas and Mississippi State – have appeared in SEC Championship Games and never won.
MVPs of Southeastern Conference Championship Games past include: Antonio Langham, Terry Dean, Ellis Johnson, Danny Wuerffel, Peyton Manning, Peerless Price, Freddie Milons, Rex Grossman, Matt Mauck, David Greene, Justin Vincent, Jason Campbell, D.J. Shockley, Tim Tebow and Percy Harvin.
Last year, in 2008, the Florida Gators beat the Alabama Crimson Tide for the SEC Championship, 31-20, then went on to win the BCS Championship Game against Oklahoma from the Big 12 conference, 24-14, and claiming the 2008 NCAA football championship title.
The 18th annual SEC Championship Game takes place on December 5, 2009 at the George Dome in Atlanta, Georgia. Kickoff is at 4 pm Eastern Time. The event will be televised by CBS Sports, but who wants to watch it on TV? See it live – get your SEC Championship Game tickets now.
