San Francisco 49ers Tickets Information
The San Francisco 49ers are one of 4 teams in the National Football Conference West Division (NFC West) – along with the Arizona Cardinals, St. Louis Rams, and Seattle Seahawks – and one of 16 teams in the NFC which in turn is one of the two conferences in the National Football League (NFL).
The team known fondly to its fans as the “Bay Bombers”, “Niners”, and “The Red and Gold”, the 49ers have been playing football since 1946 as charter members of the All-America Football Conference(AAFC) of the NFL, and specifically its Western Division, of which they remained a part until 1949.
In 1950 the San Francisco 49ers joined the National Conference of the NFL, moving to the Western Conference in 1953 and, in 1967, its Coastal Division. In 1970, the Niners joined the NFC West Division where they remain today. Since becoming a part of the NFL the Bay Bombers have consistently been one of the most celebrated teams in the league, winning 17 NFC West Division championships (1970-72, 1981, 1983-84, 1986-90, 1992-95, 1997, 2002) and 5 NFC conference championships (1981, 1984, 1988-89, 1994).
Since the advent of the Super Bowl, 49ers have won every one they’ve ever played, 5 in all – Super Bowl XVI in 1982 beating the Cincinnati Bengals 26-21, Super Bowl XIX in 1985 beating the Miami Dolphins 38-16, Super Bowl XXIII in 1989 beating the Cincinnati Bengals 20-16, the very next year in Super Bowl XXIV in 1990 beating the Denver Broncos 55-10, and most recently at Super Bowl XXIX in 1995 beating the San Diego Chargers 49-26.
When with the NFL West, the San Francisco 49ers played their home games at the historical Kezar Stadium. As of 1970 and their joining the NFC West, the 49ers have been playing home games at Monster Park, better known as Candlestick Park (aka The Stick). The team uniform colors are metallic gold, cardinal red, and black. and the mascot is Sourdough Sam.
They are currently under the leadership of head coach Mike Singletary. Previous to his coaching career, Singletary enjoyed a prolific career as a pro bowl linebacker before becoming assistant coach of the Baltimore Ravens, and assistant coach of the 49ers.
A number of 49ers have earned their way into the pro football history books, including the following who’ve been honored by entry into NFL Hall of Fame: cornerback Jimmy Johnson (1994), fullback John Henry Johnson (1987), defensive end Howie Long (2000), running back Hugh McElhenny (1970), quarterback Joe Montana (2000), defensive end Leo Nomellini (1969), running back Joe Perry (1969), running back O.J. Simpson (1985), offensive tackle Bob St. Clair (1990), quarterback Y.A. Tittle (1971), coach Bill Walsh (1993), linebacker Dave Wilcox (2000), and quarterback Steve Young (2005).
