Miami Dolphins Tickets Information
The Miami Dolphins are one of 4 teams in the American Football Conference East Division (AFC East) – along with the Buffalo Bills, New England Patriots, and New York Jets - and one of 16 teams in the AFC which in turn is one of the two conferences in the National Football League (NFL).
Fondly known to their fans as the “Phins” or the “Fins”, the Dolphins have been playing football since 1966 as part of the American Football League, Eastern Division of which they remained a part until 1969.
The Miami Dolphins joined the NFL and the AFC East Division in 1970. Since then they have won 13 AFC East Division championships (1971-74, 1979, 1981, 1983-85, 1992, 1994, 2000, 2008) and 5 AFC conference championships (1971-73, 1982, 1984). They also made 7 Wild Card berths (1978, 1990, 1995, 1997-99, 2001).
Since the 1966 advent of the Super Bowl, the Dolphins have played in 5 Super Bowls and won 2, consecutively – Super Bowl VII in 1972 beating the Washington Redskins 14-7, and Super Bowl VIII in 1973 beating the Minnesota Vikings 24-7.
Since 1987 the Miami Dolphins play their home games at LandShark Stadium, also known throughout the years as Dolphins Stadium, Joe Robbie Stadium, Pro Player Stadium, and Dolphins Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. This past Super Bowl XLI, on February 4, 2007 where the Indianapolis Colts beat the Chicago Bears 29-17 was held at LandShark Stadium. Super Bowl XLIV in 2010 will also be held at LandShark Stadium.
Before that, they played all their home games at the Miami Orange Bowl. The team uniform colors are aqua, coral, navy, and white. The Fins’ mascot is T.D. who, according to his team profile, was signed as a free agent by former head coach Jimmy Johnson in April, 1997.
They are currently under the leadership of head coach Tony Sparano, who marked 2008/2009 as his first season in this role, and is now beginning his second. Before that, he was offensive line coach for the Dallas Cowboys (2003-07), but also served in coaching roles with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Washington Redskins and Cleveland Browns.
A number of Dolphins have earned their way into the pro football history books, including the following who’ve been honored by entry into NFL Hall of Fame: middle linebacker Nick Buoniconti (played with the team 1969-74 and 1976; inducted 2001), fullback Larry Csonka (played with the team 1968-74, 1979; inducted 1987), quarterback Bob Griese (played with the team 1967-80; inducted 1990), offensive lineman Jim Langer (played with the team 1970-79; inducted 1987), offensive guard Larry Little (played with the team 1969-80; inducted 1993), quarterback Dan Marino (played with the team 1983-99; inducted 2005), coach Don Shula (led the team 1970-95; inducted 1997), center Dwight Stephenson (played with the team 1980-87; inducted 1998), running back Thurman Thomas (played with the team 2000; inducted 2007), and wide receiver Paul Warfield (played with the team 1970-74; inducted 1983).
