Getting its start as an Expansion Team in 1993, the Florida Panthers had one of the most impressive first seasons ever for an expansion team, ending the season just 1 point below .500 but missing out nonetheless on landing the final spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Florida Panthers Tickets Information

After that stellar first year, the Panthers continued to have some more close brushes with championship status, such as almost making it to the 1995 playoffs, or their 17-game winning streak in the first half of the 1996-97 season, only to trickle off due mostly to injuries in the second half. Their closest brush with success, however, came when, as the 1995-96 Eastern Conference champions, they succeeded in reaching the 1996 Stanley Cup finals only to lose it to the Colorado Avalanche.

The last decade or so has been disappointing for the Florida Panthers. They have missed the postseason for eight straight seasons, the current longest streak in the NFL. Coach Peter DeBoer was brought in to right the ship before the 2008-09 season and improved the team enough for the Panthers to finish 9th, tying the Montreal Canadiens for the last playoff spot but losing due to a tiebreaker. With 93 points, the Panthers finished with their second best season in franchise history, and are due for a breakthrough.

The Panthers said goodbye to their two star players, Olli Jokinen and Jay Bouwmeester, and will enter the season with a relatively young team, capable of developing into a force in the NHL. The team is backstopped by the experienced and steady goaltender Tomas Vokoun. Though the team ultimately fell short of the playoffs in 2008-09, Vokoun is a prime reason why they were in the position to compete in the first place.

With assistant captains Bryan Allen, Cory Stillman, and Stephen Weiss, veterans like Bryan McCabe and Steven Reinprecht, and young players including David Booth, Nathan Horton, Keith Ballard, and Greg Campbell, the Panthers are a darkhorse this year in the Eastern Conference.
