The Detroit Red Wings have won more Stanley Cups than any other U.S.-based team in the NHL. Their 11 Stanley Cup seasons, to be precise, were: 1935-36, 1936-37, 1942-43, 1949-50, 1951-52, 1953-54, 1954-55, 1996-97, 1997-98, 2001-02, and 2007-08.

The Red Wings also took 6 Western Conference Championships and 12 Central Division Championships.
After the 1924-25 season, the Western Canada Hockey League folded, but a new franchise in the city of Detroit was able to buy the rights to the players of that season's Stanley Cup champions the Victoria Cougars. The NHL did not, however, consider the Detroit Falcons, as they were called from 1930 to 1932, to be the continuation of that team, but a new franchise all its own. In 1932, they became the Detroit Red Wings that we know and admire (love 'em or hate 'em) today.
With Nicklas Lidstrom leading the way, this next season looks to be the most exciting one yet for the Detroit Red Wings. Having been nominated for the Norris Trophy a total of 10 times, and having won 3 consecutive seasons two separate times (2000-01, 2001-02, 2002-03, as well as 2005-06, 2006-07, and 2007-08), Swedish-born Lidstrom is considered by many to be the 21st century's top defenseman. Lidstrom has been with the Red Wings for 4 of the team's Stanley Cup wins.
Another top-playing Swede, Henrik Zetterberg, is also one of the Red Wings star assets, and the team's Alternate Captain. Zetterberg was a gold medal winner in both the 2006 Winter Olympics and the 2006 World Championships in Riga.
The Detroit Red Wings finished the 2008-09 season with a loss in the Stanley Cup Finals against the team that they beat for the cup a year before, the Pittsburgh Penguins. Lidstrom and Zetterberg will return with a host of skilled players that should keep the team as competitive as it has been for many years. Household names like Pavel Datsyuk, Tomas Holmstrom, Brian Rafalski, Niklas Kronwall. Kris Draper, Johan Franzen and Dan Cleary will put their Stanley Cup aspirations on the line once again, joining emerging players like Darren Helm and Justin Abdelkader.
The Red Wings made minimal changes in the offseason, but considering the team that they boast and the success that they have had, it’s no wonder why. The additions of Patrick Eaves and Jason Williams should help the Red Wings make the Stanley Cup Finals again.
