Detroit Lions Tickets Information

The Detroit Lions are one of 4 teams in the National Football Conference North Division (NFC North) – along with the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, and Minnesota Vikings – and one of 16 teams in the NFC which in turn is one of the two conferences in the National Football League (NFL).

Starting out in 1929 as an Independent team based out of Portsmouth, Ohio and called the Portsmouth Spartans, the team joined the NFL in 1930 when the Great Depression forced the folding of many Independent pro football franchises. They didn’t move to their current home in Detroit, Michigan nor take on the name Detroit Lions that we know them by today until 1934.

Before becoming a part of the NFC, the Detroit Lions moved through numerous NFL divisions and conferences, starting with the Western Division in 1933, then moving to the National Conference in 1950, and finally the Western Conference in 1953 and, in 1967, its Central Division. During this time, the Detroit Lions won 1 NFL West Division championship (1935), 1 NFL National Conference championship (1952), 3 NFL Western Conference championships (1953-54, 1957), and 4 NFL championships (1935, 1952-53, 1957).

When the Detroit Lions first joined the NFC in 1970 it was as part of the NFC Central Division. Before moving the NFC North Division in 2002, they picked up 3 more divisional championship wins (1983, 1991, 1993). They have not, however, won any conference championships since coming to the NFC.

Since joining the NFC North they have yet to win a division or conference championship. Additionally, since the advent of the Super Bowl, the Lions have yet to play in one, much less win one. Is this the breakout year for the post-NFL West Detroit Lions? Only time, and your Detroit Lions tickets will tell.

After spending nearly 40 years at the famed Tiger Stadium and nearly 30 more at the Pontiac Silverdome, the Detroit Lions have been playing their home games at the 65,000 seat Ford Field since 2002. The team uniform colors are silver, black and Honolulu blue, and their mascot is named Roary.

They are currently under the leadership of rookie head coach Jim Schwartz. Before his new head coaching stint, Schwartz spent seven years as the defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans. He has also had coaching roles with the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens since 1993.

A number of Lions have earned their way into the pro football history books, including the following who’ve been honored by entry into NFL Hall of Fame: quarterback Dutch Clark, halfback Bill Dudley, quarterback Bobby Layne, center/linebacker Alex Wojciechowicz, defensive back Jack Christiansen, linebacker Joe Schmidt, Defensive back Dick “Night Train” Lane, defensive back/punter Yale Lary, center Frank Gatski, halfback Doak Walker, fullback John Henry Johnson, defensive back Lem Barney, offensive tackle/offensive guard Lou Creekmur, running back Barry Sanders, tight end, Charlie Sanders.

In 2008/2009, the Detroit Lions became the first team in NFL history to go winless in a 16 game season (0 wins, 16 losses) giving them the first pick in the NFL draft. Detroit hopes that promising rookie quarterback Matt Stafford will end their 10-year playoff drought. Get your Detroit Lions tickets and see if this is the year they turn their game around.
