As of 1887 the Pittsburgh Pirates joined the National League are is now 1 of the 6 teams - along with the St. Louis Cardinals, the Milwaukee Brewers, the Houston Astros, the Cincinnati Reds, and the Chicago Cubs - that play in the 16-team league's Central Division. The Pittsburgh Pirates played their first National League game on April 30, 1887 against the Chicago White Stockings and won 6-2.

After 30 years playing at Three Rivers Stadium, in 2001 the Pittsburgh Pirates moved to their new home at PNC Park. The team conducts Spring Training at McKechnie Field in Bradenton, Florida as part of the Grapefruit League. The team uniform colors are black and gold.

The Pirates have an ongoing in-league rivalry with the Philadelphia Phillies, known as the Battle for Pennsylvania or The Turnpike Series.

In their career, the Pittsburgh Pirates have yet to win a Wild Card Berth or a Central Division title, but they have won 9 National League pennants (their first in 1901, their last in 1979). Between 1903 and 1992 they've competed in 14 playoffs.

They've played in 7 World Series and won 5: their first in 1909 against the Detroit Tigers, and their latest back in 1979 against the Baltimore Orioles.

Over 34 former players with the Pittsburgh Pirates have been inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame, 13 of whom played more seasons with the Pirates than any other MLB team.
