West Virginia University Mountaineers Tickets Information

The West Virginia Mountaineers are one of 16 teams in the Big East Conference - along with the Cincinnati Bearcats, Connecticut Huskies, DePaul Blue Demons, Georgetown Hoyas, Louisville Cardinals, Marquette Golden Eagles, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Pittsburgh Panthers, Providence Friars, Rutgers Scarlet Knights, St. John's Red Storm, Seton Hall Pirates, USF Bulls, Syracuse Orange, and the Villanova Wildcats.

The West Virginia Mountaineers are the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) men's football and basketball teams for West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia, one of 7 public universities in the Big East. Men's football and basketball are 2 of 13 intercollegiate sports in which WVU participates.

Starting out as a purely football rivalry, the Mountaineers' famed annual "Backyard Brawl" with the Pitt Panthers of the University of Pittsburgh now extends to basketball as well.

The West Virginia Mountaineers play their football home games at the 60,000 seat Mountaineer Field and their basketball home games at the 14,000 seat WVU Coliseum. The team uniform colors are old gold and blue, and the mascot is, predictably, the Mountaineer. Each year a new student is selected to portray the Mountaineer mascot, encouraged to grow a beard, fitted with a custom-tailored uniform and a coonskin cap and carrying a replica of a traditional mountaineer's rifle.

Football:

The West Virginia Mountaineers football program was created in 1891, and has an overall record of 664-442-45 (.596). They have a 13-15 postseason bowl record, as well as 13 conference titles including 5 Big East Conference.

The Mountaineers are coached by Bill Stewart who is entering his 2nd year at the position. He spent 7 years as an assistant at West Virginia before he took over the head coaching role. In his first year as coach, the team finished with a 9-4 record which culminated in a win at the Meineke Car Care Bowl against North Carolina.

There are many former Mountaineers that are building successful careers in the NFL. Players include Marc Bulger (St. Louis Rams), Steve Slaton (Houston Texans) and Anthony Becht (Arizona Cardinals). There are also many new players to the NFL such as Ellis Lankster (Buffalo Bills) and Pat White (Miami Dolphins).

The Mountaineers are poised for another successful year under Stewart, and look to improve upon their 9-4 record last year. Be sure to purchase your tickets and cheer on your Mountaineers.

Basketball:

The West Virginia Mountaineers have a number of school heroes in their previous rosters including former NBA (National Basketball Association) players Mike Gansey and Kevin Pittsnogle. All told, the Mountaineers have seen 13 of their number go All-American, 28 players drafted into the NBA, and 11 current NBA players.

The West Virginia Mountaineers have never won a Big East tournament title or a Big East regular season title. They have made 22 NCAA Championship appearances (most recently this past year, in 2009) and 15 NIT (National Invitation Tournament) appearances. In their history, they've competed in 3 finals: the 1942 NIT finals, 1959 NCAA finals, and 2007 NIT finals.

In his 3rd season now with the West Virginia Mountaineers (since 2007) is head coach Bob Huggins, who in his first 2 seasons with the team led them to a 46-20 (.697) record. Before then, he was head coach at Kansas State, Cincinnati, and Akron. Coach Huggins has a 25-year career record of 637-230 (.734).

In 2008-09 the West Virginia Mountaineers finished with a 10-8 record in the Big East and 23-10 in the NCAA. Get your West Virginia Mountaineers tickets now and see if they can make it to the NCAA tournament once again.
