In 1974, the Washington Capitals joined the NHL as an expansion team, along with the Kansas City Scouts. Since then, the Caps (as they've become known) have yet to win a Stanley Cup, though they've won five Southeast Division Championships (in 1988-89, 1999-2000, 2000-01, 2007-08, and 2008-09) and one Eastern Conference Championship (in 1997-98).

Washington Capitals Tickets Information

The Washington Capitals play their home games at Verizon Center (formerly MCI Center) in the nation's capital, Washington D.C. The facility has since been, appropriately enough, nicknamed "The Phone Booth".

In their 35 year history, the Washington Capitals have seen three of their former teammates inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame: Mike Gartner in 2001, Rod Langway in 2002, and Larry Murphy in 2003.

Among the Caps' greatest assets are two namesakes who also played together for their native Russia during the 2004-05 NHL lockout: Alexander Semin and Alexander Ovechkin. Semin had 79 points in 62 games last season. He has the creativity, offensive wizardry and soft hands of a supreme goal-scorer.

His first year with the team, Semin's comrade Ovechkin ranked third in goals (52) and points (106) scored among all rookies of all-time, earning himself a place in history and that year's Calder Memorial Trophy. Since then, Ovechkin scored 65 goals (112 points) in 2007-08, and 56 goals (110 points) last season. His accomplishments have netted him the “Rocket” Richard trophy twice, the Art Ross trophy once, and the Hart Memorial Trophy twice. Keep in mind that this has all happened in 4 years in the NHL.

Interestingly enough, Ovechkin comes from an accomplished athletic family background, with father Mikhail in professional soccer and mother Tatiana a two-time Olympic gold medalist on the Soviet Union's basketball team in 1976 in Montreal and 1980 in Moscow.

Along with the dynamic duo, Mike Green, Nicklas Backstrom, Mike Knuble, Shaone Morrison and Michael Nylander provide a reliable supporting cast. Simeon Varlamov emerged as a solid goaltender in the 2008-09 NHL playoffs, and looks to backstop the Capitals this season.

The Capitals fell short in 7 games against the Pittsburgh Penguins during the Eastern Conference championships last year. There’s no telling where Ovechkin will lead this team this year. Get your Washington Capitals tickets now and don't miss another second of the action.
