The Iowa Hawkeyes are one of 11 teams in the Big Ten Conference - along with the Illinois Fighting Illini, Indiana Hoosiers, Michigan Wolverines, Michigan State Spartans, Minnesota Golden Gophers, Northwestern Wildcats, Ohio State Buckeyes, Penn State Nittany Lions, Purdue Boilermakers, and Wisconsin Badgers.

The Iowa Hawkeyes are the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) men's football and basketball teams for the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa, one of 9 public universities in the Big Ten. They are one of the university's 24 varsity teams (11 men's, 13 women's). The Hawkeyes joined the Big Ten conference in 1899.

The Iowa Hawkeyes play their football home games at the 70,585 seat Kinnick Stadium and their basketball home games at the 15,500 seat Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The team uniform colors are black and gold, and their mascot is Herky the Hawk.

Football:

In 1889, the Iowa Hawkeyes were first recognized as a varsity football team, and the story begins there. Since 1889, the Hawkeyes have achieved a 568-509-39 (.526), a 12-10-1 postseason bowl record, 11 conference titles and 1 national title in 1958.

Kirk Ferentz is entering his 11th year as head coach of the Hawkeyes and has led them to a 70-53 record. Previous to his role at Iowa, Ferentz gained experience in the NFL as the offensive line coach of the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens.

There are many NFL players that spent their college careers at Iowa, including Bob Sanders (Indianapolis Colts), Eric Steinbach (Cincinnati Bengals), Dallas Clark (Dallas Cowboys), Aaron Kampman (Green Bay Packers), Robert Gallery (Oakland Raiders), Nate Kaeding (San Diego Chargers), and Chad Greenway (Minnesota Vikings).

Head coach Todd Lickliter is entering his 3rd year at the helm with the Iowa Hawkeyes. A former coach of the Butler Bulldogs, Lickliter was named the National Coach of the Year in 2007 after winning the Horizon League and leading his team to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament.

The Iowa Hawkeyes have a number of school heroes in their previous rosters including 52 players who've made it to the NBA. Among them are J.R. Koch (New York Knicks), Ryan Bowen (Denver Nuggets), Ricky Davis (Charlotte Hornets), Russ Millard (Phoenix Suns), Acie Earl and Brad Lohaus and Steve Carfino (Boston Celtics), Les Jepsen (Golden State Warriors), Ed Horton (Washington Wizards), Roy Marble, (Atlanta Hawks), B.J. Armstrong (Chicago Bulls), Jeff Moe (Utah Jazz), Gerry Wright (Detroit Pistons), Kevin Gamble (Portland Trail Blazers), Andre banks and Michael Payne (Houston Rockets).

Since the Big Ten championship tournament first started in 1998, reigning champions the Iowa Hawkeyes have won twice, in 2001 and 2006. They won 8 Big Ten regular season titles (most recently in 1979). As part of the Big Ten, they have yet to win an NCAA or NIT championships. They have, however, made 22 NCAA tournament appearances, including 3 Final Fours, and were the runners-up for the NCAA tournament championship in 1956.
