The Stanford Cardinal are one of 10 teams in the Pacific Ten Conference - along with the Arizona Wildcats, Arizona State Sun Devils, California Golden Bears, Oregon Ducks, Oregon State Beavers, UCLA Bruins, USC Trojans, Washington Huskies, and Washington State Cougars.

The Stanford Cardinal are the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) men's football and basketball teams for Stanford University in Stanford, California, one of 2 private and nonsectarian universities in the Pac-10, and one of 4 from the state of California, the others being the University of Southern California, UCLA, and University of California, Berkeley. They are two of the university's 31 varsity teams.

The Stanford Cardinal play their football home games at the 50,000 seat Stanford Stadium and their basketball home games at the 7,392 seat Maples Pavilion. The team uniform colors are cardinal and white. Ever since the Indian was dropped as the school's mascot in 1972, the school no longer has an official mascot, though many people mistakenly believe that it's the Stanford Tree.
