The Penn State Nittany Lions are one of 11 teams in the Big Ten Conference - along with the Illinois Fighting Illini, Indiana Hoosiers, Iowa Hawkeyes, Michigan Wolverines, Michigan State Spartans, Minnesota Golden Gophers, Northwestern Wildcats, Ohio State Buckeyes, Purdue Boilermakers, and Wisconsin Badgers.

The Penn State Nittany Lions are the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) men's football and basketball teams for Penn State University in State College, Pennsylvania, a state-related semi-public university, the only one of its kind in the Big Ten. They are two of the university's 29 varsity teams (15 men's, 14 women's). Penn State joined the Big Ten in 1990, beginning to participate in Big Ten athletics in 1993.

The Penn State Nittany Lions play their football home games at the 107,282 seat Beaver Stadium, and their basketball home games at the 15,261 seat Bryce Jordan Center. The team uniform colors are blue and white, and the mascot is the Nittany Lion.

The Penn State Nittany Lions began playing college football in 1887. They boast a 800-349-42 (.690) overall record, including an impressive 26-13-2 postseason bowl record, 2 claimed national titles and 3 conference titles. On November 22, 2008, Penn State became the 6th FBS program to win 800 games.

Joe Paterno is the head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions and has been in this role for a very long time. He is now entering his 44th year as head coach of the team and 60th year with the team in a coaching role, giving him the record for most seasons for any football coach and any university. He has led them to a 383-127-3 record, as well as 2 national titles, and 3 Big Ten Conference Championships. He has also won the Walter Camp Coach of the Year award 3 times, the most recent in 2005.

They are the only team in the Big Ten never to have won a regular season title. As part of the Big Ten, they have yet to win an NCAA championship, but they are the reigning NIT champions after defeating the Baylor Bears 69-63. They were also runners-up for the 1998 NIT championship, beaten by the Minnesota Golden Gophers, 79-72. The Nittany Lions went to the Final Four in 1954 and the Sweet Sixteen in 2001.
