The Northwestern Wildcats are one of 11 teams in the Big Ten Conference - along with the Illinois Fighting Illini, Indiana Hoosiers, Iowa Hawkeyes, Michigan Wolverines, Michigan State Spartans, Minnesota Golden Gophers, Ohio State Buckeyes, Penn State Nittany Lions, Purdue Boilermakers, and Wisconsin Badgers.

The Northwestern Wildcats are the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) men's football and basketball teams for Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, a private and nonsectarian university, the only one in the Big Ten. They are two of the university's 19 varsity teams (8 men's and 11 women's). Northwestern is one of 2 Big Ten schools situated in the state of Illinois, the other being the University of Illinois and their Illinois Fighting Illini.

Prior to 1929, the Northwestern University athletic teams were called simply "The Purple" and behind-the-scenes as "The Fighting Methodists".

The Northwestern Wildcats play their football home games at the 49,256 seat Ryan Field and their basketball home games at the 8,117 seat Welsh-Ryan Arena. The team uniform colors are purple and white, and the mascot is Willie the Wildcat. Interesting to note is that the mascot for the athletic teams at Kansas State University is also called Willie the Wildcat.

Football:

The Northwestern Wildcats football program was established in 1876 and has since played to an all-time record of 458-600-44, including a 1-7 postseason bowl record and 8 conference titles. The Wildcats have been nicknamed the “Cardiac ‘Cats” after several seasons with highly contested games, with victories in the final seconds or in overtime.

The Wildcats are currently head coached by Pat Fitzgerald. He is entering his 4th season as head coach of the team after serving as their linebackers coach for four years. He has achieved a 19-17 record overall.

There are some successful Wildcats that play in the NFL today including Luis Castillo (San Diego Chargers), Napoleon Harris (Kansas City Chiefts) and Jason Wright (Arizona Cardinals). Former players include Steve Tasker, Jack Rudnay, and Chris Hinton, all of which had very successful playing careers.

The Wildcats finished the 2008 season with a 9-4 record. Be sure to get your tickets to watch them continue their winning ways this year.

Basketball:

Since 2000 the Northwestern Wildcats have been coached by former Princeton Tigers head coach Bill Carmody, who brought to Northwestern the Tigers' offensive strategy.

The Northwestern Wildcats have a number of school heroes in their previous rosters including Evan Eschmeyer who made it to the NBA's New Jersey Nets and Dallas Mavericks.

Since the Big Ten championship tournament first started in 1998, the Northwestern Wildcats have yet to win a Big Ten tournament title, but they have won 2 Big Ten regular season titles, most recently in 1933. As part of the Big Ten, they have yet to win any NCAA or NIT championships.

In 2008-09 the Northwestern Wildcats finished 9th in the conference with a 8-10 (.444) record in the Big Ten and 17-14 (.542) in the NCAA. To cheer this team on to a winning 2009-10 season, get your Northwestern Wildcats tickets now!
