The Michigan State Spartans are the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) men's football and basketball teams for Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, one of 9 public universities in the Big Ten, and one of 2 in the state of Michigan, the other being the University of Michigan Wolverines. They are two of the university's 25 varsity teams.

The Michigan State Spartans play their football home games at the 75,000 seat Spartan Stadium and their basketball home games at the 14,992 seat Breslin Student Events Center. The team uniform colors are green and white, and the mascot is Sparty the Spartan, a muscular costumed male in a Greek gladiatorial outfit.

The Spartans are coached by Mark Dantonio. He is entering his third year at the helm and has led them to a 16-10 record so far. He comes from a head coaching position at Cincinnati where he spent two years.

There are 16 current NFL players that can call Michigan State their alma-mater including Flozell Adams (Dallas Cowboys), Renaldo Hill (Denver Broncos), Muhsin Muhammad (Carolina Panthers), and T.J. Duckett (Seattle Seahawks).

The men's college basketball game with the highest record attendance (78,129) in NCAA history was known as the Basketbowl. It took place at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan on December 13, 2003 between the Spartans and the Kentucky Wildcats.
