Gator Bowl Tickets Information

The Gator Bowl is one of the oldest Bowl Games around, having started play in 1946. The first Gator Bowl ever pitted Wake Forest and South Carolina with Wake Forest winning 26-14.

Until 1993, the Gator Bowl was played in Gator Bowl Stadium until that site was demolished to make way for the current Alltel Stadium. During the year of construction, the game was held at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, Florida.

Today, the Gator Bowl is played in the 76,000+ seat Jacksonville Municipal Stadium (formerly known as Alltel Stadium), located near the St. John’s River in Jacksonville, Florida. It is also the home stadium of the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League (NFL).

From 1946 to 1952 the game featured a team in the Southern Conference. From 1953 to 1975 it featured a team from the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Though the game has continued to change up the configuration of teams featured, starting in 2007 the game has hosted the third place team from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) against either Notre Dame or a team from the Big East or Big 12.

Several Gator Bowl MVPs have gone on to play pro football for the NFL, including: Calvin Johnson of the Detroit Lions, Leon Washington of the New York Jets, Philip Rivers of the San Diego Chargers, Andre Davis of the Houston Texans, and Javon Walker of the Oakland Raiders.

In 2006, the sponsor of the Gator Bowl was Toyota, and though there was no official sponsor the 2007 game, the current sponsor of the Gator Bowl is Konica Minolta, making the full name of the game, the Konica Minolta Gator Bowl. It will be broadcast under new contract by CBS-Sports. For the bulk of the game’s history, ABC would broadcast it during primetime. Now, after brief stints at both TBS and NBC, this year’s Gator Bowl boasts a payout of a whopping $2.5 million for each team.

The 2009 Gator Bowl took place, as all Gator Bowl games do, on January 1. This year saw the Nebraska Cornhuskers beating Clemson Tigers by a slim 5-point margin, 26-21.

In the 30+ years since the Gator Bowl’s inception, the Florida Gators, appropriately, hold the best record, appearing in 8 games and winning 6. They’re followed closely, though, by the Clemson Tigers who also have appeared in 9 games but only won 4.

Make sure you spend this New Year’s Day where all the action is. Get your Gator Bowl tickets immediately.
