Capital One Bowl Tickets Information

The yearly NCAA college football Bowl Game known as the Capital One Bowl is held at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida. The Capital One Bowl is one of the oldest Bowl games besides the Sun Bowl and Cotton Bowl not part of the BCS (Bowl Championship Series), first having been played in 1947 to a crowd of around 9,000 spectators.

The Capital One Bowl, named after the financial services company that has sponsored the game since 2001, was formerly known as the Florida Citrus Bowl (from 1983 to 2001) and before that, the Tangerine Bowl (from 1947 to 1982). When Capital One first sponsored the game, it was called the Capital One Florida Citrus Bowl, changing it again in 2003 to the briefer name we know it by today. The event is actually run by a non-profit organization called Florida Citrus Sports that is also responsible for the Champs Sports Bowl and Florida Classic.

The Capital One Bowl placed a bid in 2004 to become the fifth Bowl Championship Series Game (alongside the Orange Bowl, the Fiesta bowl, the Sugar Bowl, and of course the Rose Bowl), but was turned down, in part because of the poor and aging condition of the stadium.

The Orange County Commission voted in 2007 to spend $1.1 billion on 3 projects: building a brand new stadium for the Orlando Magic, constructing a new performing arts center, and upgrading and improving the Citrus Bowl (so maybe next time, their bid will be accepted).

The 2009 Capital One Bowl pitted the Georgia Bulldogs against the Michigan State Spartans, Georgia winning 24-12, making this the third Capital One Bowl win for the Bulldogs.

The Capital One Bowl currently has tie-ins with the Big 10 and the SEC (Southeast Conference), and holds the first selection for both conferences after the Bowl Championship Series. The Capital One Bowl currently pays out $4.25 million, the largest amount of any non-BCS Bowl Games.

The Capital One Bowl typically takes place at 1 pm Eastern Time on New Year’s Day, immediately preceding the Rose Bowl. Like the Rose Bowl following it, the Capital One Bowl is broadcast nationwide on ABC TV.

Go to the Capital One Bowl and you’ll also be among the first to witness the debut of the Capital One Mascot of the Year. The Mascot of the Year is a contest run concurrently with the NCAA football season with 12 college mascots competing in 10-weeks of imaginary play for fans’ votes. The winner in 2009 was Iowa State University’s Cy the Cardinal.
