Billy Joel Tickets Information

Born William Martin Joel on May 9, 1949 in Bronx, New York, Billy Joel started his rapid rise to legendary status in 1973 with the release of the hit single that gave him his nickname. But far more than “just” a piano man, Billy Joel is a skillful multi-instrumentalist, playing the accordion, harmonica, and guitar as well.

Billy Joel took a much-publicized and emotionally-received retirement from pop music after releasing River of Dreams in 1993 to launch a new career composing, recording, and performing classical music. But with the recent release of the single “All My Life”, having premiered on People.com from February 7-14, this song writing superhero proves that it’s still rock ‘n roll to him.

In his life, Billy Joel has sold over 100 million records globally. According the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Billy Joel is the sixth bestselling musical artist in the U.S. He’s released 12 studio albums, 3 live albums, 3 hits compilations, and 1 classical album. From that cavalcade of music, no less than 52 Billy Joel singles have achieved notable hit status on charts worldwide.

Billy Joel’s collection of hits include such familiar favorites as: “We Didn’t Start the Fire”, “A Matter of Trust”, “The Longest Time”, “An Innocent Man”, “Tell Her About It”, “Uptown Girl”, “Goodnight Saigon”, “Allentown”, “Say Goodbye to Hollywood”, “Sometimes a Fantasy”, “You May Be Right”, “Don’t Ask Me Why”, “Honesty”, “Big Shot”, “My Life”, “She’s Always a Woman”, “Only the Good Die Young”, “New York State of Mind”, and “The Entertainer” – to name just a handful.

Billy Joel has won 6 Grammy Awards: 1978 Song of the Year and Record of the Year for "Just the Way You Are"; 1979 Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Male and Album of the Year for 52nd Street; 1980 Best Rock Vocal Performance for "Glass Houses"; 1991 Legend Award, and 2004 Hall of Fame Award for Just the Way You Are.

He was inducted the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 1992, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999. And though he never completed high school, he has been awarded 5 honorary doctorates (from Fairfield University, Berklee College, Hofstra University, Southampton College, and Syracuse University).

Billy Joel’s music has been so influential, in fact, that world-renowned and multiple award-winning choreographer Twyla Tharp designed an entire hit Broadway show, Movin’ Out, solely around Billy Joel songs.

And sports fans, NFL football fans specifically, got treated recently to Billy Joel performing the National Anthem at the 2007 Super Bowl XLI (where the Indianapolis Colts beat the Chicago Bears, 29-17), his second such venture, the first being Super Bowl XXIII in 1989.

He also gave the historic last performances (originally intended to be one performance until demand for tickets was so high he added a second date) at home of baseball’s the Mets, Shea Stadium, on July 16 and 18, 2008, in what turned out to be a pair of star-studded evenings featuring guests like Roger Daltry, Steven Tyler, John Mellencamp, John Mayer, and Don Henley, right before the famous stadium was scheduled for demolition. This was following a string of sell-out performances at Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun Casino.

Most recently, Billy Joel released a 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of his acclaimed The Stranger in a 2 CD + 1 DVD box set.

Billy Joel is currently reviving his celebrated Face2Face tours opposite fellow piano man and song writing legend Elton John, with dates scheduled on and off for at least two years. Shows started in March 2009 and they will run till November 20. (Including performances at the Key Arena in Seattle, ORACLE Arena in Oakland and Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City).

The program of these incomparable Face2Face performances feature both Billy Joel and Elton John opening with duets on twin pianos, followed by individual sets featuring each headliner separately, closing with an encore reuniting the two on stage with both their full bands.
